                            ----**************----

A game by Edgar M. Vigdal
                               And Simon Quincey

Kastle Kumquat is a lesser known Amiga Game (kinda giftware) and has always been a favourite
of mine. This remake has been prepared especialy for the Retro Remakes 2006 competition in
collaboration with EMV. Its primarily a maze game with some puzzles and secret rooms. Key
collecting for progression, enemies to dodge and fruits to collect. A simple game, but well
designed and i feel it has that "one more go" factor. We hope you like it.

Its worth reading through this manual. There's a couple of useful tips in here :)

Requirements for playing this game:
***********************************

This game should run very easily on a wide range of systems. Its been designed to be friendly
with laptop screens and monitors of all resolutions and due to its simple design it should
not require high pc specs to play smoothly. However, the minimum resolution supported is
800*600. The game will default to fullscreen mode but you can easily switch to windowed mode
with F4 or by choosing the windowed mode option on the options screen (press O for the
options from any of the intro screens). This setting IS stored for your next game.

NB// An 800*600 windowed game is actually 806*625 (due to window borders) so a laptop whose
highest resolution is 800*600 will probably be limited to fullscreen.

Minimum: PII-350, 32MB RAM, 16MB Video, 35MB HD Space + DX7 or newer.
Medium: PIII-800, 128MB RAM, 32MB 3D Video, 35MB HD Space + DX7 or newer.
Best: P4-2.8GHz+, 512MB RAM, 128MB 3D Video, 35MB HD Space + DX7 or newer.

The game supports Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, and XP, but you must have DirectX version 7 or
later installed! This can be downloaded direct from Microsoft at this address...

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx

The game also supports windows installed joysticks and/or joypads.

TIP !: Do not have too many programs running at the same time! This can make the game run
slow and jerky on lower spec machines. As with any game really.

..and always check for newer or better drivers for your graphics or sound card!

(www.nvidia.com for geForce powered cards)
(www.ati.com for ATI powered cards)

In the future a Mac version may also be made available.

Installing the game:
********************

Unzip the game to a folder and run KK.exe to play. Simple.

Starting the game:
******************

After the game is up and running you will first see the competition splash screen. After this
some title screens and info screens will show with instructions for the game and the first of
4 tunes will start. (options for music can be changed later) Pressing right on the keyboard
will skip to the next info screen or title screen.

Those info screens are as follows...

What if the game goes wrong ?
*****************************

Kastle Kumquat does have some exception handler/error trapping code added and there will be
a KastleKumquat.dbg file in your games folder (wether the game worked or not). Please,
before running the game again, send that to me

hitt.man@ntlworld.com

Also, be sure to report any other problems to us on the same address above. Thankyou.

Your first choice:
******************

The first thing you should do is read the info screens and set up your options. The joystick
is always available (so long as its set up in windows) and you can redefine the keyboard
controls on the options page. The chosen jump key is also the games start key (right CTRL by
default or the joystick fire button). You can also run and jump diagonally (which is
necessary for some puzzles). Press jump to start the game or press O for the options screen.
Escape from the intro/options screens will quit the game.

NB// A limitation on some keyboard designs in conjunction with the PTK development language
means that Left CTRL may stop you from running and jumping in the 2 vertically diagonal
directions. Please test this first if you wish to use left CTRL. Some will find its ok, some
may not.

The options:
************

On the options screen you will find the following options:
Simply click a line to toggle the option, adjust the slider or enter a new key value.

SOUNDS EFFECTS ON/OFF = Click to toggle the ingame sounds on or off
MUSIC ON/OFF = Click to toggle the music on or off
MUSIC VOLUME = This ones a slider. Simply set to your desired volume
SOUNDS VOLUME = Another slider to set your volume. A sound effect will loop to help.

FULLSCREEN / WINDOWED = Click to toggle to windowed mode or back to fullscreen.

SELECT GFX STYLE = Original is the default style and is simply an enhanced version of
the original games gfx. Alt. Style is exactly what it says, a
slightly modified version with a new colour scheme.

GAME MODE = Click to change. Available modes are Tutorial and Normal. On first
run of the game the mode here will be set to Tutorial. Once you've
played that mode it will automatically change to Normal mode.

U, D, L, R + JUMP = Click each one to define a new key. Some keys will not be allowed.

Other keys available

 JUMP  = Start game
 END   = Mute all sound
F4 = Toggle Windowed and Fullscreen modes
F8 = Saves a screenshot to a folder called "screenshots" within your games folder. Only
works ingame. Each picture gets a new number. e.g. screenshot001, screenshot002 etc.
ESC = Exits the game in play, exits the options screen or quits the game completely if on
         the intro or info screens
RIGHT = Move to next title screen or info screen (before starting a game)

The game controls:
******************

You control the player with these keys (by default)

   Move Left = Cursor Left
   Move Right = Cursor Right
   Move Up = Cursor Up
   Move Down = Cursor Down
   Jump            =  Right CTRL

You can also choose to use a joystick or gamepad so long as you have one set up within
windows. The joystick is always on and the keys can be reconfigured of course. Press O on the
title pages to get to the options screen.

How to play:
************

Work your way through the kastle, opening doors, dodging traps and enemies, finding keys and
of course the coveted kumquats. Extra lives are given for every 20 kumquats found and can
also be found spread around the kastle too. Coloured crystal keys must be found to activate
the coloured floor plates. This will then open more doors for you. And remember, your player
only needs a thin pathway to walk on. Look out for those secret rooms. They aren't all easy
to find !!

NB// The Tutorial rooms are 4 simple rooms designed to show you all the games elements. You
will walk over switches, find keys and open doors. Pick up fruits, extra lives, find secret
walls and invisible walls. Grab 30 fruits and get to the exit to complete it.

GAME TIPS
*********

For those of you that actually read these manual text files, heres some bonus tips :)

You are safe at the start point of EVERY room on first entry. This gives you the opportunity
to study enemies patterns and plan your path. Use this to your advantage!

EVERY key has a purpose and you should never pick up more than 1 of the same colour. You can
pick up more than 1 but it will only ever count as 1, so the second would be wasted and lost
forever. Wasting keys will mean rooms cannot be accessed.

If you make a mistake with keys somewhere remember that a room is reset (if you die) to how
it was when you entered it.

Take your time and always check solid walls for secrets.

Theres a secret sto... erm, switch, for the first door early in the game.

The start room requires a leap of faith later. THIS ONES IMPORTANT.

There is a save point about 40% of the way into the game. You are required to have gotten all
fruits at this point to make the save become active. How many fruits that is, is up to you to
find out :)

NB// If you do manage to find the save point but you get there with only 1 life, and that
life doesn't last you very long, you could always try to improve your save. This would mean
starting again from room 1 and to do this, you must delete your options.dat file. This will
of course reset your screenmode, volumes, graphics, gamemode and key defines to default as
well.
